“Father, the sleeper has awakened!”
The sleeper, in this case, being the Dune fanbase. The first official trailer for Denis Villeneuve’s long-awaited adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune is scheduled to drop later today. Early teases in Vanity Fair have suggested that Villeneuve is hedging as close to the book as possible, but also is taking some style cues from David Lynch’s 1984 adaptation. Lynch’s Dune is polarizing, but still beloved by fans as the “original” Dune. And you can stream it on HBO Max right now.
Originally published in 1965, Frank Herbert’s Dune tells the story of Paul Atreides, the heir to a major noble house in a future where humanity has conquered the stars. Paul’s father, Duke Leto, has been granted control of the desert planet Arrakis, nicknamed Dune. Arrakis is the most important strategic point in the galaxy because it’s the only place where the “spice” can be harvested. This mysterious substance is used in everything from cooking to life-extending medicine to transforming human beings into space-folding worm dudes known as “navigators.” The problem for House Atreides? The last house to control Dune was House Harkonnen, their mortal enemies. They know they are walking into a trap.
Of course, Dune is so much more than that. It’s a meditation on the political uses of mysticism, a rebuke against colonialism, and even a story about climate change. So how can you watch the original Dune and when will the trailer for the Timothée Chalamet version premiere? Here’s what you need to know about Dune…
WHERE CAN YOU WATCH THE ORIGINAL DUNE?
The original Dune, directed in 1984 by David Lynch, is currently streaming on both HBO Max and HBO. The film starred Kyle MacLachlan as young Paul Atreides, Francesca Annis as his warrior priestess mother Lady Jessica, and featured folks like Sean Young, Patrick Stewart, and Sting in a variety of supporting roles.
If you’re looking to stream Dune for free, both HBO Max and HBO offer a free 7-day trial for eligible new customers. After that, both services cost $14.99/month. Note: HBO Max comes with all the same content as HBO, but with additional catalogue favorites and HBO Max originals.
Of course, you can also buy or rent Dune on SVOD services like iTunes, Prime Video, YouTube, and Vudu.
WHEN DOES THE DUNE 2020 TRAILER DEBUT?
Good news, my spice girls and boys! The first official trailer for Dune premieres online today at 12 PM ET/9 AM PT. You should be able to catch it on YouTube, Twitter, and all places trailers drop.
In Denis Villeneuve’s star-studded version, Paul Atreides will be played by Timothée Chalamet, Duke Leto by Oscar Isaac, and Lady Jessica by Rebecca Ferguson. Jason Momoa is playing Duncan Idaho, a warrior loyal to House Atreides, and Zendaya is Chani, a mysterious Fremen native to Arrakis. (And it’s all honestly perfect casting in this fan’s opinion.)
Dune is still eyeing a theatrical release on December 18, 2020.
