Tiffany Haddish Voices The Sounds Someone Makes When They Explode In Phineas and Ferb Movie

Warning: This article contains major spoilers for Phineas and Ferb The Movie: Candance Against the Universe on Disney+.

If you keeping watching Phineas and Ferb The Movie: Candance Against the Universe on Disney+ all the way to the credits, well, first of all, you’ll get to catch a pretty cool after-credits scene. But you may also notice something odd about the cast list: Comedian Tiffany Haddish‘s name is listed in the credits as “The Sound Someone Makes When They Explode From the Waist Up.”

If you watched the film—which was directed by Bob Bowen and released on Disney+ on Friday—you may recall that the sister of Phineas and Ferb, Candace (voiced by Ashley Tisdale) was abducted by aliens. You may also recall that when Candace introduces herself to said aliens, they inform her that her name, Candace, sounds exactly like “the sound someone makes when they explode from the waist up.”

“Does that happen often?” Candace replies, incredulous.

As a matter of fact, in this alien world, it does. The little green aliens explode whenever one of them gets excited, which tends to be when one of them gets free stuff. Candace remembers this crucial detail when [spoiler alert] it turns out the aliens are evil and using mind control. Thankfully, the big final battle takes place on a baseball field on free t-shirt day. And what could get an alien more excited than catching a free t-shirt from a t-shirt gun?

Candace, armed with her t-shirt cannon, explodes a ton of aliens from the waist up, and each time she does, we hear the noise of someone saying “Candace.” And yes, that really is comedian Tiffany Haddish who says it. In a phone interview with Phineas and Ferb creators Dan Povenmire and Jeff “Swampy” Marsh, Decider got the scoop on how exactly that came together.

“When you think about the sound that somebody makes when they explode from the waist up, I don’t think there is a possible other choice, other than Tiffany Haddish,” Marsh told Decider with a laugh. “It was simple for us. That wasn’t even clever casting.”

“We had heard that she was a fan of the show,” Povenmire explained. “She had one request: She wanted some Phineas and Ferb t-shirts. Now, the problem is, they haven’t been making Phineas and Ferb t-shirts for five years. So I was like, ‘By god, I’m going to get her some Phineas and Ferb t-shirts.’ She wanted Perry the Platypus t-shirts, specifically. So I got some turquoise and orange acrylic paint, some sharpies, and some nice t-shirts. I sent one of my production assistants to a place to get some nice t-shirts that they thought would be in her size. And I hand-painted some Perry the Platypus shirts for her.”

Added Marsh, “She now has the most exclusive Perry the Platypus t-shirts in the entire world!”

This isn’t the first time Povenmire and Marsh have gone out of their way to get a fun voice cameo for a very small role in Phineas and Ferb. The character of Meap the alien, who only ever says the word “Meap,” is voiced by ’70s and ’80s soap opera star Lorenzo Lamas, another fan of the show. They also, for this movie, got Weird Al Yankovic for another small t-shirt related role—the shirt canon guy.

“It’s sort of like, in the original South Park, George Clooney played the part of the dog who just barked in the first episode of South Park,” Povenmire said. “I love that.”

Now Phineas and Ferb The Movie: Candace Against the Universe can bring that same joy to sharp-eyed viewers. And Haddish got a free, hand-painted t-shirt out of it—not to mention a new credit for her IMDB page.

“I would have to say that per hour, that might be one of the best gigs she’s had,” Povenmire said. “It’s two syllables.”
