Millie Bobby Brown Plays Sherlock Holmes’s Sister

There’s a new genius detective around, and her name is Enola Holmes. Netflix dropped the first full-length Enola Holmes trailer on Tuesday morning, starring Millie Bobby Brown as the 14-year-old sister of the world-famous detective, Sherlock Holmes.

Though not a character in Arthur Conan Doyle’s original detective novels, Enola is the star of her own popular young adult book series written by author Nancy Springer, and she’s soon to be the star of the upcoming Netflix film, which will begin streaming on September 23.  Jack Thorne (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, The Aeronauts) adapted the script, while Harry Bradbeer (Fleabag, Killing Eve) directs. The film was originally set to open in theaters, but Warner Bros. sold the film to Netflix rather than delay the release due to the COVID-19 pandemic. All the better for Sherlock Holmes fans, who will soon get to see their beloved detective portrayed by Henry Cavill, with Sam Claflin playing his brother, Mycroft. I dare say this is the most attractive casting of the Holmes brothers to date.

In the trailer, Enola wakes up one morning to find her mother, Eudoria Holmes (Helena Bonham Carter) has gone missing. So she enlists the help of her world-famous brother—and Mycroft, too—to help track her down. Mycroft disapproves of Enola’s tendency to forgo lady-like traditions, such as wearing hats and gloves, but Sherlock sees her intelligence. It may not quite be the story Arthur Conan Doyle originally envisioned, but it looks like a fun, spirited adaptation. Of course, sharp-eyed Twitter users already pointed out a glaring historical inaccuracy from the poster alone, so we’ll just have to see how the film measures up next month.
