Dylan O’Brien’s Love and Monsters Film Gets First Trailer

Dylan O’Brien is willing to risk it all for his high school love in his latest film, Love and Monsters. The horror comedy takes place seven years after a “monsterpocalypse” has terrorized the earth and changed the way humans live forever. O’Brien stars as Joel, a young man whose family died in the attack. After living alone for years as one of the few survivors, his only hope for reconnection to his old life is his high school girlfriend Aimee (Jessica Henwick), who is still alive after the two were separated years ago.

In today’s trailer, we see the moment Joel, who’s been living underground to stay safe, finally reconnects with Aimee over the radio after scanning for her for years. With the help of some fellow survivors, Joel learns that Aimee’s colony is 85 miles away, but he is willing to take the risk and journey out into the open to find her. Along the way, he picks up some new pals, including a dog he takes on as a companion during his search for Aimee.

After living underground for so long, Joel isn’t used to the monsters lurking above — and we see plenty of them in today’s first look at the film. They’re slimy, bumpy and massive, with long, dangerous tongues that can take out a human with one deadly flick. Lucky for Joel, he’s saved from an attack thanks to a Samurai-wielding fellow traveler. Although Joel starts out with some questionable survivor skills, he slowly finds his way in the wilderness, even blowing up a monster in midair with a grenade. “That was awesome,” he says breathlessly. “I feel like Tom Cruise.”

The film, which comes from filmmaker Michael Matthews and Stranger Things producers Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen, also stars Michael Rooker, Ellen Hollman, Melanie Zanetti, and Ariana Greenblatt.

Love and Monsters premieres on VOD Oct. 16. Expect to see it on Google Play, iTunes, Prime Video, Vudu and YouTube, as well as any other platform where you can rent films digitally. Watch the full trailer in the video above.
