Though it may not have the movies, the second leg of the virtual DC FanDome event, titled “Explore the Multiverse,” definitely has the star-power. And nowhere is that more evident than the just announced cast list for the 1940s Superman Radio Series, which will feature Tim Daly, Wilson Cruz and Daniel Dae Kim all playing the Man of Steel in scripts recently unearthed from the Warner Bros. Studios vault.
Co-produced by Warner Bros. Television and The Creative Coalition, an advocacy organization that supports the advancement of the arts in schools and communities across America, the one-hour event will be available on demand starting Saturday, September 12 at 1pm ET, for only 24 hours, on DC FanDome’s website. According to a release provided to Decider, “using original scripts from the long-running radio serial recently unearthed from the Warner Bros. Studios vault, this rare, never-before-seen production will allow fans to experience the Man of Steel in a unique way.”
That unique way is multiple casts performing the scripts, including Wilson Cruz, Tim Daly and Daniel Dae Kim all reading the role of Superman. The cast also features — deep breath — Jason Alexander, Troian Bellisario, Erich Bergen, Anthony Carrigan, Terry Crews, Sam Daly, Lea DeLaria, Giancarlo Esposito, Sean Giambrone, Nicholas Gonzalez, Jason Isaacs, Richard Kind, Eric McCormack, Dean Norris, CCH Pounder, Anthony Rapp, Yolonda Ross, Caterina Scorsone, Tony Shalhoub, Tamara Tunie, Henry Winkler, Alfre Woodard, and Constance Zimmer.
“We are thrilled to join comic fans and creators at DC FanDome: Explore the Multiverse to bring the original Superman to life and celebrate the arts,” said The Creative Coalition CEO Robin Bronk via release. “We encourage Superman fans to learn more about The Creative Coalition’s mission to support the arts by visiting TheCreativeCoalition.org. We are grateful to Warner Bros. and DC for supporting that work.”
This is pretty exciting overall for fans of nostalgia and superheroes, but the men playing Clark Kent, a.k.a. Superman (sorry, spoiler) carry an added weight to them. Tim Daly might be best known for his role on Wings, but he’s been playing the voice of Superman since 1996, most notably in Superman: The Animated Series. Wilson Cruz, for his part, was outspoken about a derogatory portrayal of Superman in a 2013 theme park show (the show was canceled). And perhaps most notably, Daniel Dae Kim has been part of a fan campaign to play Superman since 2017, supported by DC’s Legends of Tomorrow star Caity Lotz, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. star Chloe Bennet, and even Kim himself:
You can probably figure this out from the name, but the 1940s Superman Radio Show, originally titled “The Adventures of Superman,” launched in 1940 and ran until 1951. Over the course of, no joke, 2,088 episodes, the radio show fleshed out and innovated multiple aspects of Superman’s mythology; most notably kryptonite. Recently, award winning writer Gene Luen Yang revisited one of the most well-known arcs on the radio show, “Clan of the Fiery Cross,” for a critically acclaimed comics adaptation titled Superman Smashes The Klan.
DC FanDome: Explore The Multiverse picks up on the success of DC FanDome: Hall of Heroes, a streaming event that snagged 22 million global viewers in 24 hours (per Warner Bros.). The second event will debut on September 12 at 1pm ET, and run for only 24 hours. Unlike the previous event which focused on one, eight-hour long video with multiple panels and screenings, “Explore the Multiverse” will feature hundreds of hours of on-demand content, including the 1940s Superman Radio Show. Expect more news on DC FanDome as we get closer to the event.
